About this Gmail Templates email template

The Follow-Up Gmail email template is built and tested specifically for Gmail. Gmail is the world's largest email client — over 1.8 billion accounts and ~30% of all email opens — so designs that work in Gmail are the baseline for any modern email program. SmartMailing's AI-generated Gmail email templates are tested in Gmail web, Gmail mobile, and the inbox tabs (Primary vs Promotions), with hand-coded HTML that survives Gmail's CSS sanitizer and renders consistently across devices.

When to use this Gmail template

Personal-feel marketing

Designed-in-Gmail templates often outperform "designed" templates in Primary tab placement. Use this for sender-from emails that need to feel personal at scale.

Newsletter sends to consumer audiences

Most consumer subscribers open in Gmail. Building Gmail-first ensures the design renders the way most readers will see it.

Cold outreach to Gmail / Google Workspace inboxes

Cold email lands in Gmail inboxes 70%+ of the time in B2B. Gmail-tested templates avoid the formatting tells that send cold sends to Promotions.

Internal company emails

Most companies on Google Workspace send internal updates through Gmail. Templates built for Gmail rendering keep internal communications looking professional.

Best practices for Gmail email templates

Avoid 102KB+ emails. Gmail clips emails over 102KB, hiding the bottom of the email and adding a "View entire message" link that crushes engagement.
Use proper alt text on every image. Gmail blocks images by default for first-time senders.
Avoid embedded `<style>` blocks for critical layout. Gmail strips some CSS; use inline styles for anything that must render.
Don't use background images for buttons. Gmail strips background-image CSS — use a colored table cell with text instead.
Test in Gmail web AND Gmail mobile. The two render the same template differently, especially around responsive breakpoints.
Match the From name to the address. "Bódi <[email protected]>" performs better in Primary tab than "Marketing <[email protected]>".

Frequently asked questions

How do I create an email template in Gmail?+

In Gmail: Settings → See all settings → Advanced → Templates → Enable. Then in compose: ⋮ menu → Templates → Save draft as template. SmartMailing-generated HTML pastes directly into the compose window.

Why does my email look different in Gmail vs other clients?+

Gmail strips certain CSS properties and clips emails over 102KB. Templates from SmartMailing are built around Gmail's specific quirks so the rendering stays consistent.

Will this template land in the Primary tab?+

Tab placement depends on the sender, not the template. Tips: send from a recognized sender (the recipient has emailed before), avoid heavy promotional language in subject lines, and warm the sending domain. The template stays out of the way of all of that.
